Overview

Sawara, a townscape that harks back to the Edo Period.
A canal district with a history of around 600 years, Sawara still retains the culture of the Edo Period, and the old townscape can be seen along the Ono River and Katori Street.

NIPPONIA Sawara Merchant Town Hotel was set up in a merchant town centering on Ono River.
Taking the traditional Japanese houses dotted around the area, they have kept the old appearances of the buildings while renovating the inside to add modern facilities.
The old Nakamura-ya Store that has seen the town change over the years was transformed into the Geisho Wing and houses the front desk and restaurant.

Once you have checked in, walk along the old street to the guestroom wing. There are 4 guestrooms in total, all different from each other. Some were former merchant houses, while others were restaurants in the past.
Experience the history and the endurance of the town and its people.

For dinner, guests will be treated to authentic French cuisine filled with seasonal local flavors.
Enjoy a unique experience here, and immerse yourself in this historic town.

Stayed at a 200-year old renovated warehouse with friends, a very spacious two-stories room with 4 separate beds and a large tatami room to relax. Dinner is French based and in many cases uses locally produced ingredients. The fish at the breakfast was so tender and cooked just right. The highlight of the stay, however, was the professional yet friendly service by the staff - special thanks to F san who made our trip truly enjoyable. I’d think foreign visitors would particularly enjoy this place and setting. Highly recommended.

As well, the concept of Nipponia is very unique, that the town itself is the hotel. The reason we gave the bath a 2 is because it did not have a cover, nor did it have a the standard Japanese style of automatically heating the water, which meant it lost its heat rather quickly and for each person to get in the bath it had lost some of the temperature making it slightly more than luke warm. We also found that there was a lack of information provided by the staff. When we arrived we were unaware that we would be staying in the separate annex (about a 10 min. walk from the main building, and were told to park the car there and return to get the key. We were traveling with my 85 yr. old mother-in-law and we had to walk back to the main building for check in/out, dinner and breakfast). We also were not recommended/told where to pick up any food stuffs/drinks that we might want being a distance from the main building.

Suite

檜のお風呂、ふかふかのベッド、子供の可愛い浴衣、 ホテルとは別ではありますが、美味しいうなぎ、快晴で暖かい中での川下りなど、最高の小旅行となりました。 皆様でのご対応ありがとうございました。

Cypress bath, fluffy bed, cute yukata for children, Although it was different from the hotel, it was the best excursion, such as delicious eel, going down the river in a sunny and warm weather. Thank you for your response.

Information

Preservation area for important traditional buildings
Sawara Town

The town of Sawara was a rural village within the territory of Katori Jingu Shrine, which is known as Japan's Three Great Shrines and Shimonosou Kokuichi Ichinomiya, but from about 600 years ago, post towns and commercial cities were formed along the Ono River. In the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu's orders changed the Tone River on a large scale, and the Ono River was connected to the Tone River, so Sahara developed a great deal as a shipping hub connecting Tohoku and Edo. The Suigo commercial capital along the Ono River has been selected as a Shigenden district.
Furthermore, the townscape and culture still remain in Sahara, and the Sahara Grand Festival that has continued since the Edo period is registered as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage.
