Aso area Onsen

A hot spring site where you can feel the power of nature

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

Mt. Aso is in the northeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, just in the heart of Kyushu Island.
This volcano erupted in the primeval age, blewing away the lip of its crater and formed one of the biggest caldera in the world. Inside this caldera, hot springs gush out, trains run, and people live their life. Thus, Aso shows quite a rare example in the world.
The Aso area, where you can feel the dynamism of the Earth through five senses, has a lot of nice places with a superb view such as Daikanbo and Kusasenri. It also has been the shooting place for a movie, and is always full of tourists throughout the year.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

Aso is dotted with hot springs of various sizes. The most famous one is Asouchinomaki Onsen in the northern part, where various guest houses and large-scale facilities stand in rows.
It is also known that some great writers such as Soseki Natsume, Tekkan Yosano and his wife, Akiko used to visit this place.
