Shimosuwa Onsen

Mythology, cultured patrons, post station, a hot spring town

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

Nestled in the center of Nagano Prefecture, there is a hot spring resort in Shimosuwa Town surrounded by lush nature such as Suwa Lake and Yashima Marshland.

With abundant source springs, Shimosuwa Onsen used to host many travelers and writers as the only post station with hot water on the Nakasendo Highway centuries ago.

To this day, the townscape reflects those days as a post station, dotted with public baths and foot baths. Writers used to love these inns.

Every corner of the hot spring resort is nostalgic, and it continues to soothe visitors today just as centuries ago.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

A goddess who resided in Suwa Taisha, Yasaka Tome-no-Kami, moved to a lower shrine with some cotton soaked in hot water. On the way, drips fell on the ground and hot springs came out. When the goddess placed the soaked cotton on the ground, hot water gushed out, which was the beginning of Shimosuwa Onsen, according to mythology.
