Hitoyoshi Onsen

The hot spring of rejuvenation loved by the lord and called “little Kyoto in Kyushu”

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

Hitoyoshi Onsen is a hot spring located in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It gushes out at about 50 points along Kuma River, which is one of the three most rapid streams of Japan. Hitoyoshi City flourished as castle town in ancient times, and now it is called “little Kyoto in Kyushu”. You can see many old merchant houses standing in a row, and enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere here. As this spa village is situated in a basin and surrounded by mountains, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme, and the river fog covers the whole village in some seasons. For this reason, it has a nickname “foggy village”.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

It is uncertain when Hitoyoshi Onsen was opened. However, there remains a record which says that Tametsugu Sagara, a warring lord, took a bath in this spa in 1492, so it is considered as a historic hot spring. The spring quality is hydrogen carbonate spring, and the water is smooth to the touch and has skin beautifying effect. For this reason, it is also called “hot spring of rejuvenation”. It also has effects on neuralgia, muscle pain, arthralgia and so on.
