Shirahone Onsen

Secluded and Long-established Onsen with Milky-Color Spring Water

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

The word “Shirahone” literary means “white skeleton(s)”that adds a subtle and profound nuance.

This name comes from the skeleton-like appearance that debris from the opaque hot spring water sticks to the surfaces of rocks around bathtubs.

This hot spring is located on the east side of the slope of Mount Norikura-Dake where you can feel the blessing of majestic nature and fresh air with your entire body.

For sightseeing, Funtokyu (Hot-spring Blowout Hill), a national treasure, is located within walking distance.

Also, Yakushido temple (the god of medical care) is another sightseeing spot where visitors of the therapeutic spa would worship since ancient times.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

Throughout the history of Shirahone Onsen, they say “If you bath in for three days, you will not catch a cold for the next three years.”

Shirahone Onsen is especially effective on stomach diseases where Bokusui Wakayama (1885-1928), a poet, would often visit for therapeutic treatments.

Although no document has been left that indicates when Shirahone Onsen was established, it should have over 600 years of history since Kamakura period (1185-1333.)
