Nozawa Onsen

A ski resort full of the atmosphere of spa

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

This hot spring area is situated in the northern mountains in Nagano Prefecture, and is also the birthplace of ski resort and Nozawana, local cole.
In this area, there are about 30 spring sources with an abundant quantity of water. Local people often wash and boil some vegetables in the pool of hot spring water. Such scenes of everyday life are still seen here and enhance the atmosphere of the spa village.
It is also known as a ski resort full of the atmosphere of spa, that a lot of tourists visit throughout the year. There are a number of souvenir shops standing in a row, which sell steaming “oyaki”, a local stuffed dumpling, and you will stop short unintentionally to look at it.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

Though there are different opinions on the history of this hot spring, the most general one is that “Gyoki”, a Buddist priest of Nara Period, found it. In any case, this hot spring has quite an old history.
The spring quality is sulfate, sulfur spring.
It has effects on neuralgia, rheumatism, female disorders, gastrointestinal disease, skin disease, diabetes and so on.
The 14 open-air baths in the spa village are available for free, which have been protected by “Yunakama” system for a long time (even so, it is recommended to offer some money into the offertory box settled at each open-air bath).
