Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

The Onsen area in the mountain village of Echigo which is covered in snow, is Matsunoyama Onsen, also known as Kenshin Uesugi's hidden Onsen.

Matsunoshima Onsen is selected as one of Japan's three major medical Onsens along with Kusatsu Onsen and Arima Onsen. As it is said that the Onsen here is fossil salt water from 12 million years ago, it contains the most Metaboric Acid in Japan.

Hoshitoge Rice Terraces is located nearby the Onsen, where you can enjoy the original scenery of Japan at any time of the day.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

The Onsen water at Matsunoshima Onsen not only contains the major substance of Japan's three major Medical Onsens, Metaboric Acid which has disinfection effects, it also contains Silicic Acid which has great effect on your skin.

The spring qualilty is Chloride Spring and is told to be effective for cuts, peripheral circulatory disorder, coldness, dry skin and depression. The Onsen was found more than 700 years ago. There is a legend that the Onsen was found as "a hawk flew down into the Onsen in the valley to cure its wound".
