Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

Sarugakyo located in Minakami-town of Gumma is an inn town with long history where travellers struggled to pass Mikuni-summit, a dangerous spot at that time, would visit to heal physical fatigue from their journey.

This hot spring town overlooking beautiful Lake Akaya is surrounded with greens of the mountains where you can enjoy tranquility.

Echigo area is famous for Kenshin Uesugi (1530 -1578), one of the most powerful feudal rulers during Civil wars period in Japan. According to the legend, while Kenshin was staying at this Onsen, he dreamed of ruling the eight provinces around Kamakura area. Just like Kenshin experienced, you may come across with an inspirational dream during your stay at Sarugakyo.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

During Edo Period (1603 – 1868) this place was previously called Sasa bath, Yushima Onsen. In 1958, the Onsen area was relocated to the current place for water dam construction and renamed as Sarugakyo. In this area, you can enjoy various outdoor activities including Kayaking, camping with abundant nature throughout year.
