Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

This peaceful hot spring village is at 10-minute driving distance from the center of Aizuwakamatsu City in Fukushima Prefecture, which is famous for Byakkotai, a group of young samurai of 19th century. It has a nice atmosphere of a hot spring trip and a long history, which are appropriate to its nickname, “Annex of Aizu”.
About 17 inns in different sizes line on both sides of the valley, which was made by the flow of the spring water, and many of them accept one-day bathing.
From here, you can admire Tsuruga Castle, where the tragedy of Boshin War occurred in the end of Edo period, and Mt. Iimori, where the young boys of Byakkotai sleep. It is said that Hijikata Toshizo, the Vice-Commander of Shinsengumi, cured his own wound here when he was injured.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

It is said that this hot spring was found by Gyoki, a great Buddhist priest, about 1300 years ago. A lot of cultured persons such as Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Yumeji Takehisa and Akiko Yosano loved this hot spring in the past.
The quality is thin, sulfate spring, and it has effects on rheumatism, female disorders, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, skin disease and so on.
