Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

Shinhirayu Onsen, situated in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, is one of the hot springs which constitute Okuhida Onsen Village as well as Hirayu Onsen, Fukuji Onsen, Tochio Onsen and Shinhodaka Onsen in the vicinity. It is about 15 minutes drive on the mountain road from Hirayu Onsen, which is at the northern foot of Mt. Norikura. You can fully feel an atmosphere of a secret spa here.
Shinhirayu Onsen is one of the biggest hot springs of Okuhida Onsen Village, where you can enjoy various tastes from modern hotels to nostalgic inns.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

It is not certain when Shinhirayu Onsen was opened. However, there remains an oral tradition which says that one day, some people of Izumo clan, tired after a long journey, was guided by the divinity of dragonfly, then found this hot spring. There remains also a record which says that Enku, a Buddhist monk of Edo Period who is famous for carving many wooden statues of Buddha, took a bath in this spa. The spring has two different qualities: simple spring and chloride spring. It is said that the water has effects on neuralgia, rheumatism, fatigue recovery and so on.
