Unzen Onsen
The hot spring at the foot of Unzen Ridges since 1300 years ago

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

Located on Simabara Penninsla in Nagasaki Prefecture at the western foot of Unzen Dake (Ridge), this spring is believed to have been opened 1300 years ago.

At the heart of the resort, "Unzen Hell" is gushing out steam and very acidic hot water.

20 inns vary from high-class, Japanese-style ryokans, classic hotels, guesthouses to simple sleeping accomodation.

The resort is divided into three areas, Koto (Ancient Spring), Shinto (New Spring), Shojigoku (Small Hell) with different water qualities. Five bathing facilities offer a day use.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

The color and quality of source springs differ, but all come with the sulfur smell. The water is very acidic, which is especially good for skin problems, as well as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

In 1956, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (current Ministry of the Environment) designated it as National Hot Spring Recreation Area.
