Atami Onsen is well known as one of top 3 hot spring resorts in Japan, where super-hot spring water gushes out in the large area in front of Suruga Bay.

The hot water springs out in many places from coastline throughout the slope of the mountains, creates magnificent sceneries in Atami.

The traditional townscape of Atami hot spring resort owns a unique charm, and its old-fashioned atmosphere reminds people of old good days memory in their heart. In addition, with the proximity to the center of Tokyo and Yokohama, this hot spring town has been popular for its great access.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

Atami Onsen has a very long history of over 1500 years.

The name of Atami (consists of two Kanji letters “熱=Hot “ 海=Ocean”) originates from the state of sea water as if it was boiled by hot spring water coming out from the sea bottom.

Up until early Showa period (1926–1989), majority of hot springs in Atami used to be sulfate springs, however; currently quality of many hot springs at coastline gradually have changed over to chloride springs while being mixed with sea water over time.
