Ikaho Onsen
A spa village full of atmosphere, with stone steps and running hot spring water

Introduction of Hot Springs (Onsen)

This hot spring village spreads out on the mountainside of Mt. Haruna in Gunma Prefecture, at an elevation of about 700 meters.
The history of this spa village is old, and appears in Manyoshu, the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, and Kokinshu, an early anthology of Japanese poems of Heian Period. It was more than 400 years ago that the basic patterns of this hot spring village were established.
The hot spring water coming straight from the source runs through the village, and a lot of Japanese-style hotels, souvenir shops and restaurants stand in both sides of the street with stone steps. We can say that this is one of the liveliest spa villages in Kanto Region.
You can find a poem written by Akiko Yosano halfway of the symbolic stone steps, which enhances the good mood of the spa.

Effects and characteristics of Hot Springs

The history of this spa village is old, and appears in Manyoshu and Kokinshu. During Sengoku Period, as a big therapeutic bath to cure injured warriors was required, the “Komaguchi system” was established. This system has been taken over since then.
The spring quality is simple, sulfate spring. It has mainly effects on fatigue, cold constitution, hypertension, arteriosclerosis and skin disease. As this spring water warms the body thoroughly and increases the blood circulation, it is known as “water of fertility” which is good especially for women.
