NIPPONIA Sawara Merchant Town Hotel / chiba Kujukuri・Choshi 78

Overview

Sawara, a townscape that harks back to the Edo Period.
A canal district with a history of around 600 years, Sawara still retains the culture of the Edo Period, and the old townscape can be seen along the Ono River and Katori Street.

NIPPONIA Sawara Merchant Town Hotel was set up in a merchant town centering on Ono River.
Taking the traditional Japanese houses dotted around the area, they have kept the old appearances of the buildings while renovating the inside to add modern facilities.
The old Nakamura-ya Store that has seen the town change over the years was transformed in to the Geisho Wing, and houses the front desk and restaurant.

Once you have checked in, walk along the old street to the guestroom wing. There are 4 guestrooms in total, all different from each other. Some were former merchant houses, while other were restaurants in the past.
Experience the history and the endurance of the town and its people.

For dinner, guests will be treated to authentic French cuisine filled with seasonal local flavors.
Enjoy a unique experience here, and immerse yourself in this historical town.

*There are pet-friendly rooms for those traveling with dogs.

As well, the concept of Nipponia is very unique, that the town itself is the hotel. The reason we gave the bath a 2 is because it did not have a cover, nor did it have a the standard Japanese style of automatically heating the water, which meant it lost its heat rather quickly and for each person to get in the bath it had lost some of the temperature making it slightly more than luke warm. We also found that there was a lack of information provided by the staff. When we arrived we were unaware that we would be staying in the separate annex (about a 10 min. walk from the main building, and were told to park the car there and return to get the key. We were traveling with my 85 yr. old mother-in-law and we had to walk back to the main building for check in/out, dinner and breakfast). We also were not recommended/told where to pick up any food stuffs/drinks that we might want being a distance from the main building.

The employees' response was wonderful and it was very pleasant. The rooms are clean and comfortable, modern and comfortable while leaving the atmosphere of an old private house, It was a bit cold, probably because it was midwinter that I stayed in a large two-storey building. The food was refined and very delicious while utilizing the local ingredients. If you have any difficulties, because you are using old scattered houses as guest rooms, In order to go to the main building which is the front desk and restaurant, you have to go through the road with many traffic, But the goodness of using a genuine old private house as it is is hard to get anywhere else. In general, I want to go again only for accommodation.

We stayed on wedding anniversary. It was a special day for us because we had children and it was our first trip with three families. I was worried about traveling with children, but in my room, meals, service of staff, etc., everything was more than I imagined, and I had a really happy time. The room was rented for the whole building, so I could spend my time without any inconvenience even if I made a loud voice. We warmed the dressing room firmly with the prepared stove, and we were able to enter the hinoki bath with the whole family. The room did feel a bit cool, but there were no inconveniences as there were two air conditioners, a stove and a humidifier. I was relieved because I expected it to be colder. Very spacious and stylish room with a unique padlock at the entrance! I was so excited and relaxed that I wanted to stay here forever. I was nervous about not having any trouble because the meal was in the same place as other guests, but I made an instant bed in a chair for my 0 year old son and waited, gently and warmly greeted me I was really happy and impressed that I was made. In addition, we gave a plate with a message to the son and a surprise anniversary of the wedding anniversary, and I was always impressed by the deliciousness of the dishes and the hospitality. My son was in a good mood. The staff was very warm and I was really happy that they welcomed me, including my 0 year old child. It was clear that the interaction between people was valued, and warm conversations became important memories. I want to go to stay again.

Information

Important Cultural Properties Preservation Area
Merchant Town Sawara

Sawara was originally a farming village in the territory of Katori Shrine, one of Japan's top three imperial Shinto shrines of the time. From around 600 years ago, merchant town and commercial districts began to crop up along Ono River. It developed into a major inland port, as a point where the water transport of Tohoku crossed over with that of Edo (old Tokyo), when Ono River and Tone River were connected under the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Edo Period.
The buildings along the Ono River are now designated as Important Cultural Properties.
Sawara retains the effects of the culture from those times, and their festival that dates back to the Edo Period is registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

NIPPONIA - An experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the rich local culture and history
NIPPONIA takes old Japanese houses around the country and renovates them while retaining their historical features. They transform the buildings into accommodation overflowing with culture and history.
